Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers 'keeping tabs on Benfica's €19.5million-rated winger Nicola Gaitan'

The Argentinian has been linked with a switch to Manchester United in the past but Rodgers is ready to make a move after missing out on Yevhen Konoplyanka

Benfica winger Nicola Gaitan has emerged as a summer target for Liverpool, according to reports.

The Reds look set to qualify for next season's Champions League - the first time they will have done so since 2009 - and Brendan Rodgers has claimed he will bolster his squad with 'next level' signings .

Dnipro winger Yevhen Konoplyanka was widely expected to seal a move to Anfield this summer, after a proposed January deal fell through at the last moment .

However, Rodgers now appears to have become frustrated in his pursuit of the Ukrainian and according to Talksport , Gaitan is now the wide man on his radar.

Liverpool have sent scouts to check on the 26-year-old this season and will look at him closely when Benfica face Tottenham in the Europa League last-16 next week.

The Portuguese side are thought to want €19.5million for the Argentinian international, the same fee the Reds would have parted with for Konoplyanka.

Gaitan was heavily linked with a switch to Manchester United in 2012 and was reportedly in advanced talks with the club.

However, Rodgers is ready to steal a march on the Red Devils and the lure of Champions League football may be too much to turn down.

Kanu Nwankwo undergoes heart surgery again

Nigerian football legend and founder of Kanu Heart Foundation, KHF, Nwankwo Kanu(OON, MON, UNICEF Ambassador) at the weekend underwent a corrective heart surgery at the Cleveland Hospital Ohio, USA.The surgery was carried out during one of his normal yearly routine medical checks at the hospital following the 1997 heart surgery at the same hospital.

Co-ordinator jof the Kanu Heart Foundation, Pastor Onyebuchi Abia confirmed the success of the surgery adding that the former Super Eagles captain has since left the intensive care unit, ICU, of the hospital and is recuperating in the hosptal.
